http://www.nygz.xhedu.sh.cn/wicresoft.pgs.portal.web/List.aspx?

Hello. My name is Jacob and I arrived in Shanghai exactly 4 weeks ago today. It might seem quite long, however, for some strange reason, time flies in such enormous metropolis.  Maybe it’s because of unbelievably long summer or simply  because of great cultural differences, which I attempted to comprehend over the past few weeks, that I did not realise  we almost half way through November. However, I can officially say, that I am living like a local now, although I am not yet very fluent in Mandarin.

When I signed up for this project, I was not sure what to expect. Of course I was aware what it involved , however, for someone who lives  in a small, quiet town somewhere in Norfolk, which looks more like a scene from Postman Pat,  China was a step into unknown. Yet this was one of the reasons which spurred me to write an application and participate in the interview process.  Learning about other cultures is not only fascinating but carries a great educational value, which only comes with experience.

Living in Shanghai extends the boundaries of my adaptability. If I can survive in such an enormous city, I can most definitely adapt to living at a university accommodation next year. My visit to Shanghai is a test of not only independence but also responsibility and will most definitely help me succeed in my future life.

Until exploring educational projects organised by BCS at greater depth , I haven’t really appreciated   the importance of such connections between schools around the world. I have not realised how much it brings into students’ academic life to gain a different perspective of the world we live in. It is without a doubt impossible for all students of one school to be teleported across to the other side of the world to experience what I have experienced at first hand, however there are other ways of creating closer links between individual students, especially in the era of internet and this is partially what I am trying to achieve during my stay at Nanyang.

I am currently in the process of writing a blog so that both students from Nanyang and Wymondham College can follow  me during my stay in Shanghai.  As both schools will have a direct access to it, we’re hoping that this will break the ice and help students to make new friends and thus get more personal account of the school life.

The students  seem very excited about the idea of meeting someone from the completely different part of the world with different ideas and values, and I am more than sure this is also the case at wymondham college.  Besides such conversations will help students to practice their language skills.

We’re also planning to organise an English corner, which will allow the students to find out more about the country, its traditions and cultural background. Each session would revolve around certain topic, where we would be discussing the differences between China and England, for instance in terms of music, film, drama ect.

In addition, I’ll take part in organising the great British week just before Christmas, which will involve many practical activities – such as making cards, decorating Christmas trees, cooking etc... The students will be able to experience the British culture at first hand.

On this note, I also considered running a film club, which would not only help the students to gain a better understanding of different genres of film, but also develop their analytical skills and learn language in a more entertaining way.  This also links well with The Charles Dickens Project. Film is just another medium. Many of  Dickens work have had their adaptations on cinema screens and it might therefore be a good idea to introduce students to his work without spending too much time reading and analyzing the material.

I’m really looking forward to my next two months of working at Nanyang. I am sure that we manage to sustain this well developed connection between the schools.

Building bridges

I have been lucky enough to experience four months in a school in China, and I believe what I have learnt from this experience has really changed my perspectives on many beliefs I held before I landed as an eager 18 year old explorer at Pudong International Airport.

Looking back at my time in Shanghai it seems to have flown by so fast, a mixture of unique and unforgettable feelings and experiences, all the building blocks of a city where conventional incompatibility is seamlessly overcome to create a millionaire cosmopolitan city.

The focus of my time in Shanghai so far has been on daily life and the education system in China. Being immersed in a school thousands of miles away from my own has really given me an insight into the lives of my peers. At first glance it seems that the physical distance was a metaphor for the opposite lives they seemed to lead, but upon getting to know some of the students I have witnessed that in many instances teenage characteristics transcend all physical barriers. These experiences, I feel, came from the opportunity of being immersed in the local environment and participating in local customs and activities. This would not have been possible without the work Wymondham College and the Norfolk County Council together with the kind and welcoming XuHui Education Bureau and Nanyang High School.

The most striking and prominent features of the Chinese students I have been lucky enough to meet are their determination and focus, especially with regard to their education. Nanyang High School is a top school and naturally their workload reflected their status, but I definitely did not imagine the magnitude of the workload and at times, pressure the students faced. The sheer competitiveness they face for a university place and the grades they must obtain to enter really changed my perspective on what I defined as competitive. Preparation is everywhere, from school hours to further hours of homework, and from monthly examinations as a path to the final university entrance exam in June. Even the daily commutes of some students to school were a sign of their true devotion to a good education. However, the students never gave the impression that it was ever a chore, their determination, motivation and discipline is something that I really admire in young people in China.

Their almost robotic façade was definitely easily uncovered when I got to know the students on a more personal level. A number of students were very kind in inviting me to their homes in their free time to experience family life of a typical Shanghainese family. Upon getting to know various people I soon discovered that just like everyone else at home, everyone here was unique. The improvement in my mandarin no doubt played a role in this by helping me understand and participate in conversation and even tease some people!

These aspects of Chinese life and people cannot be felt across the world through books and videos; I believe that strengthening links between schools, but more importantly between individual students through writing, the internet, and in person is vital in broadening minds both in Shanghai and Norfolk. If the opportunity is available, as it has been for me, it needs to be nurtured in order to satisfy inquisitive young minds, especially along with the growing coverage and interest in China and the future. With my initial experiences I do hope that it will give a good foundation upon which the programme can be built and students can hopefully contribute even more to school life.

International Societies, ‘GuWeiJun’ in schools are an instrumental base in creating the links between schools. At Nanyang High School, the students were eager to take part in extra curricula activities after school and the GuWeiJun were very well organized and lively. They worked so well as a team and all were eager to learn about life in other countries and to improve their English. They really put a lot of effort into organizing the ‘British Week’ and their work really paid off by involving literally hundreds of students in the school! I hope the organizers of ‘China Week’ to be held at Wymondham College will be as enthusiastic as their counterparts in Shanghai, and I have no doubt that ‘China Week’ will mirror the success of ‘British Week’ here.

From my experiences so far, there is no doubt that introducing students to their peers across the world is beneficial in opening minds and establishing lasting friendships. I have seen that links between my sister schools have taken a step forward, and I have no doubt that the enthusiasm surrounding these links is a driving force between the two schools. The building of a lasting friendship takes time, but the foundations of the bridge have been laid.

Finally I would like to express my sincere gratitude to those who have been involved in the programme, from the planning and delivery and those who have been so helpful and welcoming in my new home.

在“What can I do after class? Now lets go to British week.”
